Mission/Objectives

The mission of the Behaviorists Interested in Gambling Special Interest Group (BIG SIG) is to foster and promote research on gambling and treatments for problem gambling from a behavioral perspective. Meeting this mission is important for behavior analysis because we as a field have basically been silent in the large body of literature on gambling.

Description of Membership

The BIG SIG is comprised of researchers, instructors, practitioners, and students who devote themselves full or part time to the study and/or treatment of gambling.

Recurring Annual Events

Each year, the BIG SIG organizes several symposia that occur at the annual convention of ABAI, and hosts its own annual convention.

Publications/Newsletters

TThe BIG SIG publishes a new journal, Analysis of Gambling Behavior. Originally published online, Analysis of Gambling Behavior is now housed at the University of North Dakota (UND). UND will print the journal (two issues per year) and share ownership with Jeff Weatherly. Back issues will be available online (url to be announced soon). To take out a subscription to Analysis of Gambling Behavior ($40: professionals and institutions; $20: students), contact Jeff Weatherly or Mark Dixon.

Specifically of Interest to Behavior Analysts

The purpose of the SIG is to gain a scientific understanding of the growing social concern of pathological gambling and understanding the behavior of gambling. Although the SIG continues to grow, it can always benefit from active participation by new, interested members. Individuals interested in becoming a part of the BIG SIG should contact either Mark Dixon or Jeff Weatherly.
