Mission/Objectives

The mission of the Behavior Analysis for Sustainable Societies (BASS) Special Interest Group is to advance applications of behavior analysis to environmental issues that contribute to the development of solutions to climate change, pollution, overconsumption of resources, and imbalances in environmental sustainability. Objectives include:

Description of Membership

Membership is open to all ABAI members, scientists, researchers, professionals, and students interested in sustainability and environmental issues.

Annual or Recurring Events

BASS SIG activities are to include, but not be limited to, annual meetings at ABAI and presentations of posters, papers, and symposia at conferences.

Publications/Newsletters

BASS established a relationship with the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies (CCBS) and will use their website as a portal for dissemination of scientific and technical reports, public relations, and linkage with other areas within behavior analysis. Communications related to BASS operations are enabled by a Yahoo discussion group linked from the CCBS site. The CCBS is one immediate web outlet for posting of articles, media, and other items. There is a limited publication record by behavior analysts related to environmental protection (e.g., Scott Geller, Steve Hayes, others). A reading list of these is published on the CCBS site. One function of BASS is to generate more published work by behavior analysts in this area and potentially create a new journal devoted to this topic.

Specifically of Interest to Behavior Analysts

The Behavior Analysis for Sustainable Societies SIG is interested in supporting initiatives for research and practical applications of behavioral solutions for environmental issues while taking a collaborative multi-disciplinary approach to developing these solutions.
