Behaviour Analysis in Ireland

By Dr. Geraldine Leader

The Behavior Analysis in Ireland group (BAI) was formed in 1975 by Professor Leo Baker and Professor Julian Leslie. Traditionally BAI was university based, comprising of academics and students interested in the dissemination of behavior analytic research. The group hosted regular conferences for its members.

More recently there has been rapid growth in the field of behavior analysis in Ireland. Behavioral methods are extensively used in health care, therapeutic, and educational settings. Additionally, several schools using applied behavior analysis for the treatment of autism have been set up throughout the country. Courses in behavioral methodologies are increasingly being developed by universities and service providers.

These developments created a momentum within BAI to progress our group to full division status within the Psychological Society of Ireland. Our aim in this endeavor is:

The highlight of the past year was the passing of a motion at the Psychological Society of Ireland’s Annual Conference in November 2005 that formally established the new Division of Behavior Analysis. The Division recently held its foundation meeting. The meeting was opened by Professor Julian Leslie who delivered a lecture that chronicled the history of behavior analysis over the past 30 years. The main business was the election of a new committee whose members are as follows:

Once business was concluded an excellent lecture was delivered by Richard M. Foxx, entitled “Behavior Artistry: The Art and Science of Behavior Analysis.â€

The Division of Behavior Analysis looks forward to our continued association with international bodies such as the European Association for Behavior Analysis and the American Association for Behavior Analysis. We would like to express our appreciation for the support we have received from ABA in the past and anticipate future co-operation and development.
